– THE TALIBAN RALLIES BEHIND MULLAH AKHTAR MANSOOR
The Afghan Taliban said, on 09/23/2015 they have put aside disagreements and rallied around their new leader Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansoor.
The announcement followed weeks of intensive between Mullah Mansoor’s supporters and some of Mullah Omar’s family circle followers lead by his brother Mullah Manan and eldest son Mullah Yaqoub. Both eventually pledged loyalty to Mullah Mansour according to the Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid
In recent weeks, hundreds of Taliban commanders, fighters and clerics travelled in and out of Quetta,Pakistan, the sponsor of the Taliban to try to overcome the open divisions.
Quetta near the Afghan border is the administrative “Capital” of the Taliban for over 25 years.
The task of unifying the movement appears as yet incomplete with some senior figures still threatening to disobey Mansoor and run their own faction and their own insurgent attacks.
* Sirajuddin Haqqani was nominated as Military Operation Commander suggesting that the powerful Jihadi Insurgency, based in Pakistan but operating in Afghanistan, the Haqqani Network joined the formation (it can be assumed that the notorious Pakistani Intelligence – ISI – is behind the move.
Waheed Mozhda, a Kabul-based expert who used to work in the Taliban foreign ministry before they were driven from power in 2001, says the group realises that unity is key to their survival. Barnett Rubin, a leading US expert on Afghanistan, says the Taliban have been bound together by a coherent ideology that has so far prevented any splits.
Al Qaeda’s leader Ayman Al Zawahiri called in his last broadcasted messages to put aside all genuine differences and to cooperate with ISIS against the Western Democracies all over the world in a new form of Global Jihad.
Mullah Akhtar Mansoor was critically injured in a gunfight on Wednesday 12/02/2015 in an argument with commanders in the militant group, Xinhua quoted Afghanistan officials as saying. The claim was denied by the Taliban and not confirmed but indicated problems in the coherence of the Taliban leadership after Mullah Omar.
