Mohammed Reza Taheriazar was born in Tehran, Iran’s capital, in 1984. He is a naturalized USA citizen who moved to the United States at the age of two. The family settled in Charlotte, North Carolina.

In high school, he had been student council president and a member of the National Honor Society in 2001. By all means Mohammed Reza Taheriazar was a normal young student who adapted himself successfully to the Western life in USA.

On 03/03/2006, days after he graduated the North Carolina University at Chapel Hill in philosophy and psychology, Mohammed Reza Taheriazar drove a Jeep into a crowded pedestrian zone. He struck nine people but, fortunately, none were severely injured.

Shortly after the attack, Mohammed Reza Taheriazar turned himself in and was arrested. Prior to his arrest Mohammed Reza Taheriazar told the 911 dispatcher that he wanted to “punish the government of the United States for their actions around the world”.  He explained to a detective that “people all over the world are being killed in war and now it is the people in the United States’ turn to be killed” and that he acted to “avenge the deaths of Muslims around the world”. In n one letter, Taheri-azar wrote, “I was aiming to follow in the footsteps of one of my raw models, Mohammed Atta”. He pleaded guilty in court.

On 08.26/2008, Mohammed Reza Taheriazar was sentenced on two counts of attempted murder to 33 years in prison by Orange County Superior Court.
