MASS ATTACK IN KABUL FOILED AS 11
SUICIDE VESTS FOUND
Sixteen Afghan soldiers have been arrested after the discovery of 11 suicide vests, on Tuesday 03/27/2012, found inside the ministry of defence headquarters, pointed to the possibility of a mass suicide attack on to the defence ministry compound in Afghanistan. The discovery came a day after 3 NATO-ISAF troops shot dead by rogue Afghan security personnel (see - Lashkar-Gah 03.26.12). The compound, near the presidential palace, went into lock-down after Tuesday's discovery.
The alleged plot was believed to be a simultaneous infiltration of the highly secured ministry headquarters and the detonation of 11 buses transporting government employees. It appears the jackets were intended to be detonated on buses transporting staff to and from work. Eleven buses carrying 1,100 personnel were due to set off just 45 minutes after the arrests were made, Authorities were currently looking for other people in and around the compound. But, in a written statement issued Tuesday, the Ministry of Defence has rejected the reports (see also -Kabul 10.29.11).Shukria Barakzai, the country's former chairwoman of the defence committee, told reporters that she believed this was "evidence of high level infiltration". "It must be high-profile people, which are behind such incidents which take place in the ministries from time to time," she said (see - Costa's Evaluation).
