Fatah AND HAMAS AGREED ON TALKS.
After three days of negotiation in Sanaa, Yemen’s capital, and under immense pressure from Yemen President Ali Abdullah Saleh, Fatah and HAMAS agreed, on 03/23/2008 afternoon, on principles of reconciliation and restoring national unity. The basic principles of the understanding are that Hamas will agree on rewinding back the situation in Gaza prior to the takeover on 07/2007. The Fatah, in return, will agree on early elections with commitment to fully respect the results. HAMAS is almost certain that the majority it already has in the Palestinian parliament will only increase to over 2/3 of the seats so HAMAS will be able to veto and by pass any Presidential decree and that elections is the best way for HAMAS to take over also the West Bank and all the Palestinian Authority.
Azzam al-Ahmed, a Fatah politician, and Mousa Abu Marzook, the HAMAS chief negotiator, signed the deal in Ali Abdullah Saleh’s presence at the YEMENI'S presidential headquarters.
Although the road toward Palestinian national reconciliation is still long and full with mutual suspicions and hostility, the understanding between the two Palestinian factions is a recognition of HAMAS legitimacy in the Palestinian society as a full partner in shaping the Palestinian future by its’ rival - the Fatah.
The current fragile peace talks between the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and the Israelis are based on mutual recognition. The Yemen deal between Fatah and Hamas, who categorically denies any possible recognition of Israel and its right to exist, contradicts any prospect of possible peace with Israel and is a slap in the face to US policy to promote peace by relying on Fatah and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
