AL QAEDA OPERATIVE CHARGED IN ISRAEL
Khaled abu-Ragaig, 24, a Israeli Bedouin from Tel Sheva near Beer Sheva, was charged, on Friday 08/22/2008, in Beer Sheva court of plotting to set up an Al Qaeda affiliated cell in Israel among Bedouins in order to commit suicide attacks in Israel.
Khaled abu-Ragaig, a former student in the Israeli Technological Institution in Beer Sheva, who began becoming closer to Islam in 2002, during his college studies, He contacted with an Al Qaeda operative in Gaza, named on the charge sheet as Abu Balal,. At first Khaled abu-Ragaig collected information how to manufacture home made explosives, to use all kinds of detonators and to assemble home made bombs.
In 2004 Khaled abu-Ragaig tried to recruit activists to his cell. He approached a fellow student and asked him to commit a suicide attack in the central bus station of Beer Sheva. The student refused (and, probably, reported him to the authorities).
In 2006 Khaled abu-Ragaig allegedly planned to make a bomb and plant it east of Tel Sheva at a location frequented by IDF jeeps. His supposed plan was never carried out.. He was arrested on 07/29/2008.
There is a sharp increase lately in the efforts of Al Qaeda and Hizbullah to recruit activists and agents among Israeli Arabs (see - Taybeh 07.17.08).
