Abu Ubaidah Al-Banshiri

 

Abu Ubaidah Al-Banshiri was born in 05/1950 in Cairo Egypt. He joined the Egyptian police in the early 70s’. Abu Ubaidah Al-Banshiri was a devoted Muslim deeply influenced by the books of Sayyid Qutb, the mentor of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.

 

After the peace treaty with Israel in 11/1978, Abu Ubaidah Al-Banshiri was one of many Egyptians that turned out to Islamic radicalism and against the Egyptian regime. He, like many other Islamic militants, left Egypt in the early 80s’, after the assassination of the Egyptian President Anwar Saadat by Khalid El-Islambouli, on 10/06/1981, and the crack down on Islamic activists in Egypt. 

 

Abu Ubaidah Al-Banshiri fought in Afghanistan in the mid 80s’ and established a training camp for Arab volunteers to the war against the Soviet Union in the Pakistani border zone with Afghanistan. In 08/1988, he attended the founding meeting of Al Qaeda alongside Osama Bin Laden and Dr’ Abdullah Azzam and Mamdouh Mahmud Salim.

 

When Osama Bin Laden moved in 1991 to Khartoum, Sudan, Abu Ubaidah Al-Banshiri joined him there and began to organize the military activity of Al Qaeda as the senior lieutenant to Osama Bin Laden in military affairs.

 
In 1992 Abu Ubaidah Al-Banshiri met Ali Mohammed in Sudan for basic lessons on intelligence tradecraft and how to create terror cell structures that could be used for operations. In 12/1992 Abu Ubaidah Al-Banshiri’s was sent to Somalia to train Somalis resisting the USA operation - Restore Hope” At that time most of Al Qaeda military activity was focused on East Africa and he was in charge on that activity. He used many aliases and was known in Kenya and Tanzania mainly as Adel Habib. The cells organized by Abu Ubaidah Al-Banshiri executed the 08/07/1998 attacks in Kenya and Tanzania        

 

On 05/21/1996 Abu Ubaidah Al-Banshiri sank in Lake Victoria, on the ferry “MV Bukoba”, accident that claimed the life of over 800 persons.

Abu Ubaidah Al-Banshiri was soon replaced by another fellow EGYPTIAN - Mohammed Atef  Abu Hafez al Masri.
