Jaish-E-Mohammed
Jaish-E-Mohammed, (Army of Muhammad) was formed in 01/31/2000 by Maulana Masood Azhar in Pakistan after he was released from Indian jail, following the Flight 814 hostage deal. Jaish-E-Mohammed got the support and encouragement of the Pakistani intelligence ISI as one of a network of Islamic militant groups in order to fight the Indians in Kashmir.
Formally Jaish-E-Mohammed is a faction of the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (the Muiahidin movement), one of the leading militant groups in Kashmir, in which Maulana Masood Azhar, the Amir (commissioner) of Jaish-E-Mohammed, served as the general secretary of the organization prior to his arrest in India in 1994.
The, so to speak, new Islamic militant organization Jaish-E-Mohammed was endorsed by three leading Islamic clerics: Mufti Nizamuddin Shamzai, Mufti Rashid Ahmed and Maulana Sher Ali. All three, with connection to ISI, have a large cycle of students, followers and supporters and their Madrassas (Islamic schools) were notorious of being a breeding ground for devoted Islamic fighters to be sent to Kashmir. The Jaish-E-Mohammed is based in Lahore and is manned almost solely by Pakistanis.
Jaish-E-Mohammed, since 2000, got the reputation of being the deadliest terror organization operating in Kashmir, refining the method of suicide attacks, and with the most extreme ideology.
From 12/2001 Jaish-E-Mohammed is designated by USA as a terror organization.
After the INDIAN Parliament attack, on 12/13/2001, Maulana Masood Azhar and other leaders of Jaish-E-Mohammed were arrested in Pakistan but after a year, on 12/14/2002, Lahore High Court in Pakistan ordered their release.
Because of USA political pressure the Jaish-E-Mohammed was banned in Pakistan in 01/2002. Many of Jaish-E-Mohammed activists, such as Ghazi Baba, continued with their terror activities under other names but almost with the same chain of command.
