BENAZIR BHUTTO KILLED IN BLAST
Just as she finished to address her supporters in a rally in Rawalpindi, on 12/27/2007 at about 18:00 local time, Benazir Bhutto, 54, twice former PM of Pakistan, was targeted by a suicide bomber, who managed to kill her and 16 of her close aids and bodyguards. Police said a suicide bomber fired at Benazir Bhutto as she was leaving the rally venue in a park before blowing himself up.
Benazir Bhutto was campaigning for the next election scheduled to the 01/09/2008.
On 10/18/2007 Benazir Bhutto returned to PAKISTAN from 8 years of exile in UK and Abu Dhabi, after she reached a sharing-power deal with President Pervez Musharraf. On the same evening Benazir Bhutto was a subject to an earlier assassination attempted with a car bomb in Karachi, that caused more then 125 fatal casulties, among them 20 police officers and many hundreds wounded, while Benazir Bhutto escaped the assassination attempt unharmed. (See - Karachi carnage)
Benazir Bhutto insinuated several times that although she stands firm against Islamic militancy and promised decisive measures against Taliban, Al Qaeda and alike, her prime suspects to the assassination attempt are elements in the Army and security apparatus in PAKISTAN and at the head of them the notorious PAKISTANI Intelligence - ISI.
PAKISTAN just exited last week from the state of emergency, declared on 11/03/2007, and it seemed that PAKISTAN is back on track heading to democratic general elections.
The successful assassination of Benazir Bhutto plunge PAKISTAN back to turmoil and severally undermines, the meaning of the coming elections especially when another former PM - Nawaz Sharif is banned from participating, personally, in the election due to legal reasons. Although President Pervez Musharraf is not suspected of ordering such a killing the fact remains that he has, now, no meaningful leadership in the opposition.
Not like in other countries, a political crisis in PAKISTAN has a very dangerous meaning to the rest of the world. In no time the PAKISTANI nuclear bomb can be turned to be an Islamic nuclear bomb in the hands of a most extreme Islamic regime.
Benazir Bhutto assassination distances Pakistan from democracy and from the prospect of a stable country and is inflicting on all the world.
On 12/29/2007, two days after Benazir Bhutto assassination, the Pakistani regime claimed that its intelligence – ISI, managed to intercept a phone call between Baitullah Mehsud and an Islamic cleric, Maulvi Shahib, in which Maulvi Shahib admitted responsibility for Bhutto’s assassination. Pakistan regime blamed, therefore, Maulvi Shahib and Baitullah Mehsud for being responsible on the attack. The claim was confirmed in an interview with CIA Director Michael-Hayden in Washington Post on 01/18/2008.
On 01/19/2008, Pakistani Security officials announced the arrest of 15 years old Aitezaz Shah in the lawless North West Frontier Province. Aitezaz Shah is alleged to be part of a five-man squad dispatched by Baitullah Mehsud to Rawalpindi, where Benazir Bhutto was murdered. (SEE - Bhutto's murder probe )
