CHURCHS IN AFRICA THE OBVIOUS TARGETS

 FOR ISLAMISTS

At least two children have been killed and two others wounded, on Sunday 09/30/2012, when a hand grenade was allegedly thrown into a church in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, police officials say. Police suspected the cause of the explosion was a grenade (see also -Nairobi 05.28.12).

Charles Owino, a deputy police spokesman, said that the attack at St Polycarp’s church occurred on Juja Road, in the eastern part of the city. “We suspect this blast might have been carried out by sympathisers of al-Shabab,” he said.

Few hours later two Kenyan police officers have been shot dead in the northern town of Garissa, near the border with Somalia, police said. The attacks were probably related to Kenya’s Kismayo Offensive. On 07/01/2012 17 people were killed in Garissa in attacks on churches in the town attributed to al-Shabab (see – Garissa 07.01.12).

On 09/23/2012 a suicide car bomber has blown himself up at a Catholic church in a remote part of northern Nigeria, in the city of Bauchi, killing a woman and child and wounding at least 22 other people. The attack was attributed to the local radical Islamic group Boko Haram .
